Dance can feel wrought, like nails on a concrete walls or your own arms. Dance can feel free, like the moment between the leap and the instant gravity takes over. Or dance can be full of humor, if you dance with conviction, but maybe without a lot of talent, but the twinkle in the eyes makes up for that.
THE EX-TRILOGY
As a director I tell stories through film and dance, because your eye is always drawn to movement. Dance is iconic as the strut of Sinatra's waltz, the shocks of Michael Jackson's Thriller and the everything goes mentality of Spike Jonze's crazy faces parade for Kenzo.
The three short dance films Explore (2010), Expose (2015) en Exhale (2020) build on the theme trust in their own way.
In Explore the central question is: do you trust another? De main character discovers that by trusting other, your life view, vision and skillls can evolve. In Expose the dancer discovers what it's like when your trust is violated. In Exhale, the closing film of the trilogy, the main character gets the chance to, after your trust in others is misused, to overcome the trauma.
We just finished post-production on Exhale and will premiere shortly.
